Spain has this year added 15 beaches and marinas with blue flags, the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) announced during its 35th anniversary. In 2021 Spain still had 713 flags for marinas and beaches, but in 2022 Spain will be 15 flags for beaches and marinas richer and the country will again finish as world leader with 729 blue flags.
In total, Spain has received 729 blue flags (banderas azules) this year from the FEE and the Blue Flag initiative in which 50 countries worldwide participate, where 4,831 blue flags can be found. In Spain, 621 blue flags go to beaches, 103 blue flags to marinas and 5 blue flags to tourist boats in 250 municipalities.
So Spain has gained 15 more flags this year and the country is still the world leader with 729 blue flags, followed by Greece with 566 blue flags and Turkey with 551, France with 525, Italy with 497 and Portugal with 402 blue flags. The Netherlands has 183 blue flags this year and Belgium 39 blue flags.
Where in Spain?
If we look at the provinces and regions, we can see that the province of Alicante (Costa Blanca) has 74 flags and Murcia (Costa Cálida) 27 blue flags.
In Andalusia, in the province of Almería (Costa de Almería) there are 35 blue flags this year, in Granada (Costa Tropical) only 11 flags, Cádiz (Costa de la Luz) 29 flags and Huelva (Costa de Huelva) 10 flags.
What is the blue flag?
The blue flag stands for beaches and marinas that meet criteria such as safety, accessibility and environmental conditions. This year, one of every six blue flags in the world will again be found in Spain, which is again the absolute world leader with 729 blue flags.
