Ever thought of Murcia?

Ever thought of Murcia?

Murcia is relatively unknown to most holidaymakers, but that is why it is favored by others. Ancient cities, the mountains, and the fine beaches make this region a fantastic destination.

The versatile region of Murcia , with mountains, pristine beaches and ancient cities , can be found in the southeast of Spain. Murcia borders the Mediterranean Sea. Although most regions consist of several provinces, Murcia has only one. However, the region is subdivided into twelve comarcas (regions, regions).

The capital of the same name is the seventh largest city in Spain in terms of population. Murcia is also referred to as the vegetable garden of Europe , as most fruits and vegetables come from this region. For example, broccoli, limes, oranges and melons are grown there. Murcia is a major supplier throughout Europe. The region is also known for its export of flowers, olive oil and wine. In addition to Castilian, which is the main language, Murciano , a dialect of the official language, is also spoken in the area.

What does Murcia have to offer?

Despite the fact that Murcia has beautiful, extensive beaches, lovely bays and romantic fishing villages, the autonomous region is relatively unknown as a holiday resort . As a result, there is no mass tourism and it is a wonderful, quiet place to stay in the region. Yet lovers of sun holidays know Murcia more and more.

With 250 kilometers of beach on the Costa Cálida (warm coast), there is always a place to lay down your towel. For example on the white sands of San Pedro del Pinatar . A special and busy place in the region is the inland sea Mar Menor . It is the largest saltwater lake in Europe. The area around Mar Menor is known for its many health and beauty treatments. The beaches are also considered spas because of the high salinity and the mineral-rich mud in the inland sea.

The more active holidaymaker also comes into his own. At La Manga , a 22 km long strip of land that separates the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean Sea, you can practice all kinds of water sports. Because the sparsely populated region had little tourism for a long time, nature could take its course, both under and above water. There is the world-famous deep-sea port in Cartagena, in Mazarrón you will find an impressive landscape that is marked by erosion and in the vast region you will encounter the huerta , the orchards for which Murcia is known.

But there is no shortage of culture either . The capital has an imposing, high bell tower and the cathedral is also worth a visit. In Murcia, the Jewish community was very important for centuries. That is why you will find many monuments and typical parks and gardens from that time. Moreover, the city is a true university town with more than 30,000 students per year.

Other cities in the region of Murcia

In Cartagena you will find many Roman remains , such as the recently restored amphitheatre. Lorca is the city of the Baroque , where other styles can also be found. Set at the foot of a hill, this medieval town is home to beautifully decorated palaces, such as the Palace of Guevara and that of the Count of San Julián. Lorca received the Europa Nostra Award for the good preservation of the city's heritage. After the earthquake in 2011, six churches in the historic center were restored.

In turn, Caravaca de la Cruz is the fifth holy city in the world , after Santiago de Compostela, Santo Toribio de Liébana, Rome and Jerusalem. As with Mar Menor, Archena , in the fairytale valley of Valle de Ricote, offers thermal baths and spa treatments. But Archena has more to offer than just soothing baths. Important archaeological finds have also been made (remains of the Iberians) and you can make beautiful walks along the banks of the River Segura.
